The LCA Welcomes New Chairman

London Consultants’ Association Welcomes

New Chairman

Monday 15th July 2019

Dr. Mark Vanderpump, Consultant Endocrinologist has taken over the Chairmanship of the London Consultants’ Association (LCA) from Professor Neil Tolley, Consultant in ENT and Thyroid surgery having served many years on the Board of Directors.

Dr. Vanderpump stated “private practice can be a very lonely place and I am pleased that the diverse range of activities that the London Consultants’ Association is planning goes some way towards supporting and encouraging specialists. We will also continue our active involvement with FIPO, which represents these views at all levels in the sector and more widely.”

Professor Tolley, who completed his three-year tenure, believes that the whole tenet of private healthcare is changing under a ‘perfect storm’ of increasing regulation, changes to consultant working practices and employment status in the sector, and pressure on referral paths.

He and Dr. Vanderpump agree that there is a need to encourage new young consultants into the sector in order that future generations of patients are able to exercise choice in accessing expert care appropriate to their requirements.”

The LCA continues to host topical evening meetings with members of the medical and legal profession throughout the year, alongside ‘Influential Speaker Series’ dinners with distinguished guest speakers that have included three Secretaries of State for Health: Mr. Andrew Lansley MP, Mr. Stephen Dorrell MP and last April, Mr. Jeremy Hunt MP. Most recently, the LCA organised an evening meeting on the turbulent topic of ‘Gross Negligence Manslaughter’, (please click here for the report), which was followed by a dinner with influential speaker and former surgeon, Mr. David Sellu, who had been convicted and later exonerated on this charge (please click here for the ‘Do the Law and Regulation Make Patients Safe?’ report).

The LCA also has a Medico-Legal Expert Witness group, which holds training sessions working with leading solicitors (Hempsons) and QCs. These training sessions are complemented by regular breakfast meetings, where relevant topics such as ‘Dos and Don’ts’, Case Law and developments, are discussed.

The next training session will be taking place on Wednesday 4th September 2019, please enquire with the LCA office for further information on how to register.
